WHY REST?
Because God did.

Resting on the seventh day signifies a clear memory and understanding of why we are told to rest one day out of seven.  It hearkens back to the very beginning, the Creation.  The very first verse of the Bible states, in Genesis 1:1:  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  We know that God did His work of creation in six days.  And the seventh day He rested.  What is good for God, is certainly good for us.

The earth is a vast, diverse, magnificent creation, full of life.  Man is still discovering new species of insects and animals.  Many will never be discovered because they have been made extinct by man's actions, or, in some cases, a natural occurrence.  God's crowning creation is man and woman.  It was fitting that God rested on the seventh day.  I don't think God is ever tired, so the rest was, in my humble opinion, a choice made more for reflection, contemplation, and observation of what He had created.

If you or I decide to build a house, when the work is completed, even if we are not tired, we will want to stop and carefully observe our work, and reflect on what we have done.  God created, not just a house or a building, but "the heavens and the earth".  It is fitting that He wanted to stop and rest so that He could take in what He had done.

In the course of a week, we should be able to stop, and reflect, contemplate, and observe, what we have accomplished in the past 6 days.  We should give God the glory for allowing us this time to reflect, and rest.  We should use this time to look ahead to the next six days.  Our rest day should be a time to look back and look forward, and to enjoy the present moment.  We should be able to tie all three together, past, present, and future, and see how God is leading us, and guiding us, and give Him all the Praise and Glory.
