GODLY SORROW
versus the
SORROW OF THE WORLD
For godly sorrow worketh
repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the
world worketh death.
2 CORINTHIANS 7:10
The Bible makes a distinction between godly sorrow and the sorrow of the
world. Godly sorrow "worketh
repentance to salvation", "but the sorrow of the world worketh
death".People who commit suicide are under the influence of the "sorrow of the world". There is so much in the world that produces sorrow, sadness, misery, pain, suffering, crying, sickness, and, eventually, death. If you are under the influence of this sorrow, all you can see is the darkness this sorrow brings. All around it seems that there is no joy, no happiness, depression sets in. Accidents, illness, evil people, evil animals, all kinds of malice, vitriolic words, maniacal incidents, and more, converge on the mind producing the stamp "sorrow", and a downward spiral ensues, pulling the heart and soul into a deep seemingly bottomless pit of pain.
"Godly sorrow worketh repentance". Repentance means "a change of mind" concerning your purpose or something you have done. Godly sorrow means God is influencing your sorrow and He is working on your mind to change your mind, your thinking, about some purpose or something you have done. He wants to change your attitude. Godly sorrow is working to change your mind and lead you to salvation.
Salvation is deliverance, preservation, and safety. We know that when something is salvaged it is usually messed up, many kind of worn, and ready for the trash heap. Salvation delivers from the trash heap, restores and preserves, and makes one safe from the trash heap. No matter how messed up, Salvation finds a way to salvage you, to restore you, renew you, and make you useful again. This is what godly sorrow does in our hearts, and minds. It causes us to change our outlook, and have hope that God can take us, worthless are we are, and salvage us, save us from ourselves, through the life giving blood of Jesus, that covers our sins, and gives us a fresh start. Salvation saves from the penalty, power, presence and the pleasure of sin.
The sorrow of the world leads us down into a dark hole of death, while godly sorrow leads us to Repentance at the Cross of Jesus where we find Hope and Salvation. Can you see the distinction between the two sorrows?

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, Thank you for godly sorrow. Grant me and my brothers and sisters in
Christ, grace and mercy to confess and repent of our sins, and receive the
daily cleansing offered in Jesus. If
anyone reads this and is not saved, may they confess and repent of their sins
and receive the Salvation offered in Jesus, and be born again. In Jesus Name, Amen.
