HOME INVENTORY

DO YOU HAVE ONE?

Not I, said the blind man.  Oh, yeah, that's me.  I need one.  A home inventory is a complete list of personal property.  It is recommended that you have one in case of fire, burglary, tornado, earthquake, flood, or other natural disaster that destroys property. 

The State of California publishes a 37 page guide full of all the information and forms you need to do a complete home inventory.  Click the following link:

 Anyone can use this guide, no matter what state you live in.   Other states, and many insurance companies also have home inventory forms and guides, and they are available online.  Search "personal inventory guide" and you will have many choices.

HOME INVENTORY - A PLAN FOR THE UNEXPECTED

I consider a home inventory a way of planning in case of  the unexpected.  None of us wants to go through the ordeal of a fire, burglary, or natural disaster.  But these events tend to happen whether we want them to or not.  We have insurance so that we have peace of mind that in the event that one of these events occurs, we are covered.  Of course, if you rent, there is a possibility that you don't have renters insurance.  (If you don't have it, please get some renters insurance, it is well worth the $20.00 or $30.00 dollars a month).

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE INSURANCE

Having insurance is important, but having a home inventory will provide you with the information you need to file a claim for your losses, in the event that you have to use the insurance.  We all know that bad things happen to good people, so no matter how much faith we have that God will take care of us, we still need homeowners or renters insurance and a home inventory, in my humble opinion.

DECENTLY AND IN ORDER

The Bible says in   1 Corinthians 14:40:  Let all things be done decently and in order.  This verse is used a lot for many things, but I think it applies here.  Having an orderly list of our possessions will be a great asset if we need it.  The word "order" in 1 Cor 14:40 refers to "an  arranging , an arrangement".  A home inventory arranges our possessions in an orderly listing.  The Home Inventory Guide suggests that we have receipts, photos or videos, and serial numbers, so we are able to prove that we actually own the things on our inventory list.  All of this will greatly facilitate filing a claim for loses in the even of a natural or man made disaster.
