LET'S GET SERIOUS
What can each of us do to turn things around in the black
community? What are each of us doing
right now? What have each of us done in
the past to change the direction of black communities? Each of us has influence, each of us has time,
each of us has energy. What are we doing
with those resources to make a positive difference? Do we accept responsibility for dealing with
the problems?
For starters, how many of you think we should take cell
phones from our young kids, or fix them so that they function as they were
originally intended: as emergency
phones? What about demanding that music
with profanity be banned for children?
How about turning off the television for our kids except for educational
or cultural programming? How about
adults setting the example in these areas?
What if all of us decided to go to Sunday School and Church every
Sunday, and to be on time, and to take our children? What if we stopped spoiling our kids with
expensive clothing and shoes, and too much money? What if we all got involved in our Church to
work on ministry to single parents and their kids? What if we insisted that our church serve
healthy food? What if we got serious
about the things that matter, spirituality, health, and finances, making sure
we live on a budget and tithe to our church?
What if we practiced forgiveness, daily, making sure we
don't hold any grudges past sundown?
What if we prayed fervently, rejoiced always, and read our Bibles
daily? What if all parents visited their
child's school once a month, and insisted that kids have homework every
night? What if we attended PTA meetings,
school board meetings, city council meetings, and other governmental
meetings? What if we all slowed down on
the road (not too slow), stopped texting while driving, stopped talking on the
cell phone while driving, and stopped
cheating on our income tax? What if we
never drink and drive? What if we stop
drinking altogether if we can't handle it?
What if we stopped using drugs?
What if we all ate healthy, got the right amount of exercise, and took
steps to reduce stress, including getting proper rest?
What if we were good role models for our children by never
gossiping about anyone, always being polite and kind, and never telling lies?
These and many other things that we do or don't do, make our
communities what they are. All of us
bear some responsibility for the sad state of many of our black communities
because of what we do or don't do. We
can't do what we can't do, but we can do what we can do. Let us resolve to make a positive difference
starting with our own families. Let's
get serious, let's get practical. Do it
now.
