Speed Kills.
In our bodies, our hearts are overworked if they beat too
many times a minute. On the road,
accidents cause injury and death, often with the sole cause of the accident,
speeding. In relationships, we talk too fast, often saying things that we have
not thought through. Especially in
moments of high emotion, speed talking can result in the injury and/or death of
relationships. The Bible says:
Wherefore, my beloved
brethren, let every man be swift to hear,
slow to speak, slow to wrath.
James 1:19
Often our mouths run faster than
our ears. Swift, as an adjective,
means "happening quickly or
promptly". Therefore, we are to
quickly and promptly listen, while taking time to slowly craft our words and
speak, and to slowly get upset (wrath).
Often we do just the opposite, we hardly listen at all, then we are
quick to criticize and get angry. When
will we learn?
Road Rage happens when people allow themselves to quickly say harsh
things, and quickly act angrily.
Other areas of our lives are too fast at times. We may be getting involved with a new
relationship too quickly, letting our emotions and lust lead us. We can get carried away and spend our money
too fast, finding ourselves chronically broke.
We may be trying to do too many things too fast, overloading ourselves
with obligations.
Whenever we go to extremes we run the risk of hurting
ourselves or others. Athletes often
injure themselves by being in a hurry to reach some fitness goal. Overtraining is a common mistake made by even
good athletes. Athletes dope themselves
up to get in shape in a hurry, and beat their competitors. Those seeking to get rich quick will often
take risks with their money that result in them losing it all.
Speed Kills in more ways than
one. Let us all slow down.
