SIX DAYS

LABOR
Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work.  The Bible tells us this in Exodus 20:9.
God created the universe and all life on earth in six days, and. the seventh day he rested.  Because we are made in the image of God, we too are told to do our work in six days, and rest on the Sabbath.

Few people observe a Sabbath Day of rest nowadays.  Some Jews do it, and some Christians (The Seventh Day Adventist believe in keeping the Sabbath.)

It makes sense to take a day every week to rest.  Working non stop, seven days a week may make us wealthy, but we may not be healthy or wise.  Life is a lot more than money, or the things we possess.  However it is easy to get out of whack, and on the wrong track.  We live in a time of artificial light, when we can stay up all night and work.  I did it for 20 years, rotating between day shift and night shift, working 12 hour shifts.  We also live in a time when many businesses and stores operate seven days a week.  Some, like Wal Mart, never close.  This never ending cycle of work has permeated society, and influenced attitudes toward work and rest.  Today, people attempt to get by on as little sleep as possible, thinking that more time spent working will get them ahead.

I do not believe that it is necessary to avoid work on a particular day.  Officially, Saturday is the Sabbath.  I have no problem with people working on the Sabbath.  I think that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.  Still, I think we should plan a day of rest into every seven day week.  A week runs from Sunday to Saturday.  That is why Saturday, the seventh day, is considered the Sabbath.  The first six days, Sunday to Friday, we work, then, rest on the seventh day, Saturday.  If anyone can make that work in their schedule, go for it.  But, for some another day of the week may be their Sabbath.  It could be any one of the other six days.  Most people who work Monday thru Friday will find either Saturday or Sunday their only options for a Sabbath day.

Whatever the choice, a day without work is a blessing.  This includes work around the house.  Some things just have to get done, so do just those things, and rest the rest of the day.
